Exclusive polling carried out by YouGov for HOPE not hate has revealed worrying levels of Islamophobia among Conservative Party members, as well as a shocking level of denial about the problems the party faces.
The poll was conducted by YouGov, with a total sample size of 864 adults. The fieldwork was undertaken between 14th – 18th June 2019. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
While Conservative members believe that discrimination against Muslims is a big, rather than small, issue by 48% to 39%, members also buy into Islamophobic myths:
67% believe the lie that “there are areas in Britain that operate under Sharia law”, as opposed to just 18% who do not believe this to be the case
45% believe the lie that “there are areas in Britain in which non-Muslims are not able to enter”, as opposed to just 34% who do not believe this to be the case. [HOPE not hate] Read more
Two-thirds of Tory members believe UK areas ‘under sharia law’, as poll reveals scale of Islamophobia in party
Two-thirds of Conservative Party members believe parts of Britain operate under sharia law, a new poll has shown amid a mounting Islamophobia scandal.
A YouGov poll found almost half of Tories believed in the myth of no-go zones where “non-Muslims are not able to enter” and 39 per cent thought Islamist terror attacks “reflected widespread hostility to Britain among the Muslim community”.
Counter-extremism group Hope Not Hate called on leadership candidates Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to address the “Islamophobia crisis” in their party.
“From the grassroots to the great offices of state, Conservative members buy into racist myths, with almost half unwilling to have a Muslim prime minister – and only 8 per cent being proud to have one – and most denying that there’s even an issue to confront,” said campaigns director Matthew McGregor.
“No mainstream political party should accept racism and racists within its ranks. The Conservatives have paid lip service by saying they have zero tolerance to Islamophobia and anti-Muslim prejudice, but this new poll confirms they face a real crisis.” [The Independent] Read more
Almost half of Conservative members would reject Muslim Prime Minister, poll finds
A YouGov study carried out by anti-racism charity Hope Not Hate found that just 8% of the party’s members “would be proud of Britain if we were to elect a Muslim as our Prime Minister”.
But 43% agreed that they “would prefer to not have the country led by a Muslim”.
The findings come after Home Secretary Sajid Javid forced the Conservative leadership contenders to agree to an independent probe into allegations of anti-Muslim prejudice in the party.
The survey also revealed that 67% of Tory members believe that “there are areas in Britain that operate under Sharia law”, with just 18% disagreeing with that statement.
Meanwhile 45% said there were “areas in Britain in which non-Muslims are not able to enter” – with just over a third (34%) saying they did not believe that to be the case.
Forty percent of those surveyed said Britain should lower the number of Muslims entering the country, compared to just five percent who said the same for Christians or Jewish people. [PoliticsHome] Read more
Most Tory members believe Islam is ‘a threat to British way of life’, poll finds
The survey, by anti-racism campaigners Hope Not Hate, also found that nearly two-thirds of Tory activists believe the religion is “a threat to western civilisation”.
Labour said the findings showed that “Islamophobia and racism are ingrained” among some Conservative members.
Some 60% think that “Islam is generally a threat to Western civilisation”, with fewer than one-in-five (17%) taking the opposite view.
The YouGov study follows polling results released last month, which found that almost half of Conservative members would not accept a Muslim as the country’s Prime Minister.
They were released as Tory activists vote on whether Boris Johnson or Jeremy Huny should be their next leader and Prime Minister.
Shadow equalities minister, Dawn Butler said: “This poll shows that Islamophobia and racism are ingrained among some Conservative Party members. It is worrying that the people choosing our next Prime Minister hold these views.
“Boris Johnson has a lot to answer for – both because of his own record of racism and Islamophobia, including just last year comparing Muslim women to ‘bank robbers’ and ‘letterboxes’, and because of the likelihood that these Tory Party members will vote for him as leader.
“He should be held to account for it and have the decency to apologise. [PoliticsHome] Read more
